Strengthen Your Abdominal With the Best Yoga Ab Stretch Exercises!

While taking a breather during your workout, you can do these yoga ab stretch exercises between sets of an exercise. By drawing your thighs and chest toward one another, the two abdominal stretches below target the entire rectus abdominus. The upper rectus abdominus is particularly targeted when you flex your torso while the legs remain stable during this yoga abdominal stretch exercise.

Standing Forward Bend Yoga Abdominal Stretch Exercise Yoga Abdominal Standing Forward Bend: Difficulty, 2; lower back, 1. Stand with your inner anklebones touching. Bend forward slowly from the hips. Place your palms on the floor or grasp your ankles, whichever is most comfortable. Keep your legs as straight as possible, but slightly bend your knees if necessary to prevent discomfort. Press your head toward your knees, but don’t hunch your back; keep your spine elongated. Hold for 10 breaths. You’ll also notice this abdominal stretching pose really stretches the hamstrings! It also lengthens the spinal column, stretches back muscles, and even stimulates the sexual system. Wink wink, nudge nudge! ;-)

Seated Forward Bend Yoga Abdominal Stretch Exercise Yoga Abdominal Seated Forward Bend: Difficulty, 2; lower back, 1. This is like the seated version of Yoga Abdominal Standing Forward Bend. Sit on the floor with your inner anklebones touching. Slowly bend forward from the waist, bringing your head as close to your knees as possible. Grasp your ankles. Keep your legs as straight as possible, but feel free to slightly bend your knees if necessary. Hold for 10 breaths.

Just like Yoga Abdominal Standing Forward Bend, this pose also stretches the hamstrings. It also:

  • relieves stress and mild depression
  • stretches the spine and shoulders
  • relieves menstrual discomfort
  • soothes headache, anxiety and fatigue
  • reduces obesity

You may feel more of a workout on stretching your hamstrings than tightening your abs in the above abdominal stretching poses, but your entire rectus abdominus is indeed being worked by these abdominal stretches. That’s why these are good “rest period” yoga abdominal stretch exercises.
